An angry pet boutique owner has hit out at Nationwide after it claimed dog bow ties were 'pointless'. Cat Toilet House

Lucy Thompson, 36, who owns a pet accessory shop in Beverley, East Yorkshire, said the idea 'wasn't helpful' and was damaging at a time small businesses were 'taking the hit' of inflation.

She demanded the building society 'correct' the idea that bow ties for dogs were 'pointless'.

But Nationwide said it 'loved' dogs in bow ties and there was 'no offence' intended by their 'light-hearted' post.

The Facebook post, which went up on Wednesday, said: 'That bow tie you bought your dog, or the needlessly complicated kitchen gadget you used once. What's your most pointless purchase this year?'

Mrs Thompson said one of her customers lived alone with her dog which is her 'only company' and buying a bow tie put 'the biggest smile on her face'.

She added 'Could Nationwide tell my customer that this was pointless?'

She said one of her customers was also hand-making bow ties for dogs to raise money for a cancer charity.

Mrs Thompson added: 'Try telling her what she is doing is pointless.'

A Nationwide spokesman said: 'We love dogs, we love bow ties, we love dogs in bow ties.

'We were encouraging light-hearted conversation on purchases, no offence intended.'
